Swanky Magazine Interviews the wonderfully talented photographer - Jennifer Woo

PHOTOGRAPHER SPOTLIGHT | Jennifer Woo

Q1.Swanky Mag: Hello Jennifer, Can you introduce yourself to Swanky Magazine's readers? Can you tell us a little about you?

I am obsessed with my 3 beautiful kids and 2 grandchildren. I was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah.  I am a working professional in mortgage servicing. Hobbies and being around like-minded people bring me joy!  I like doing something new every quarter. It allows me to have a creative outlet, helps with growth and seeing others and life from a different perspective.

Q2.How and when did you get into photography?

It was the cart before the horse situation for me. I didn’t know I could take photos. I was gifted a camera and was told by that party that they could see my talent. Before then, I had only taken photos with my iPhone. I knew nothing about cameras or photography. I took my kids to the park posted them on social media and from there it started. I started off shooting in auto and eventually moved to manual.

Q3.What does photography mean to you?

It is an escape and a creative outlet.  I like that there is no limit.  I also like that you can allow others to see what circles in your mind through your photos.  You can bring your visions to life.  I enjoy allowing others to see themselves in a different light.

Q4.Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

I like to create pictures that tell a story.  Creates an emotion.

Q5.Where do you get your inspiration from?

Everywhere.  Anytime I see a beautiful field, an outfit, a picture of a goddess,  a costume or an image online thoughts of future shoots start dancing in my mind.   Right now, the Tarot Deck is inspiring me.  I am designing shoots to incorporate the cards and hope to publish my own deck in the future.

Q6.Do you think in advance what you want in the picture?

It is very important to me that the subject I am shooting is valued.  I want to make sure that the way he/she wants to be portrayed in the photo is honored.  I also like to take care of the amazing makeup artists that bring my photos to life. I always take a moment to make sure I get some close-ups from a makeup perspective for them.

Q7. Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

A hobbyist. The first year I did photography I took pictures of newborn babies, weddings and did family pictures, I prefer styled shoots. I like collaborating. There is more room for creativity.  It is fun taking photos with other photographers as you listen to good music in the background.  We learn and bounce ideas off of each other.  I also tend to do a better job when there is less pressure.

Q8. What has been your most memorable session, and why?

The Scotland shoot.  It was the first Styled shoot that I attended and the shoot that opened the doors for me.  I also met my good friend and the photographer who inspires me the most (Tawny Horton).

Q9. Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

Sony Mirrorless 7II.  I only have the 1.8/50 lens. Hoping to add the 85 and 135 one day.

Q10. What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

Do not compare your work to others.  Honor where you are at no matter your skillset.  I giggle every time I look at my first few sessions.  Over photoshopped and over-exposed.   Every one of us were new at one point.  I reached out to my two favorite photographers and explained to them why they inspired me and asked if they would be willing to teach me.  Both took me in and taught me lighting and let me see their behind-the-scenes.   It is fascinating and shifted my photography dramatically.

Q11. What do you think of our new magazine?

I love it! …I like your design/vision… I appreciate that you provide tear sheets the same day that the magazine is released.  A great publisher to work with.
